So, who is InfoJeff?

I have been using computers for over 20 years and been using the Internet heavily for over 8 years. I currently expend my creative juices with web design, consulting, and online marketing. I operate some affiliate and referral marketing businesses as well as Web Potentials, my own Internet services company that I founded.

In the past I have done technical customer support for UCLA, NetMark Pro International, Los Angeles County Bar Association, and several other companies. I have used the NetMark Pro web marketing system for several years (since May 2001) and still actively use it as the foundation of my online marketing. Blogs are a tremendous resource that I intend to learn and utilize better.

Sports I would like to do more of: rock climbing, boogie boarding, snorkeling in Hawaii, water skiing, rappelling

Activities I like to do in scenic areas: snow skiing, camping, hiking, and canoeing with my wife

Official looking email is most likely SPAM with a virus attachment

You may see an official looking message like this in your email box. The wording will vary, but the concept of a so-called message from your email provider with an attachment is the red flag. I have been receiving more and more of these types of SPAM. But I know this is not legitimate because I control the entire domain that these 2 email addresses are related to, and neither email address is real. A SPAMMER just made them up and most likely included a virus in the attachment. Example message: ------------------------------------------------ From: administrator@web-potentials.com To: fred@web-potentials.com Subject: *DETECTED* Online User Violation Date: Mon, 27 Jun 2005 21:00:26 -0400 Dear user fred, It has come to our attention that your Web-potentials User Profile ( x ) records are out of date. For further details see the attached document. Thank you for using Web-potentials! The Web-potentials Support Team +++ Attachment: No Virus (Clean) +++ Web-potentials Antivirus - www.web-potentials.com Attachments Files: nmutnf.zip (31k) ------------------------------------------------ If you receive a message like the one above, please do not open the attachment. To verify its authenticity, compose a NEW email message to the support or customer service department of the domain name where you have your email address. If you do not know what that is, manually type in the domain name into your browser and look for the customer service or support link. The domain name is the part after the "@" sign in your email address.

4th of July theme for the weekend

OK, in celebration of the 4th of July here in the United States, I have changed my theme to fireworks! I can just hear them going off overhead right now . . . I changed my photo from the snow skiing shot to a more appropriate beach picture. That's where I am going Friday; taking a drive up the coast with my sweetie.

Great to be outdoors

We had a great time Friday driving up the coast. It was a bit overcast at times, but we had fun anyway. We are in Los Angeles, so its not too far to get to the beach and then along PCH. Anyone from this area who knows PCH (Pacific Coast Highway)? We shot some pictures and even shot some video having our BBQ.

Spyware is a top concern for any business or office

CNET Networks conducted a survey in March 2005 which I put in my blog. All this to say that your workplace should utilize anti-spyware solutions and I recommend you do the same on your computers at home.

needed a toll-free phone number

I needed the toll-free phone number for the US Post Office to call and see how late the local post office is open tonight after work. It turns out the number is (800) 275-8777

I found it by calling (800) 555-1212 and asked for "US Post Office". That (800) 555-1212 turns out to be a pretty handy service when you do not know a toll-free number for some company.

Mars Hoax Circulates the Internet

"The Red Planet is about to be spectacular. Earth is catching up with Mars [for] the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. On August 27th Mars will look as large as the full moon. NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN."

Those are from a widely-circulated email. Only the first sentence is true. The Red Planet IS about to be spectacular. But the rest is a hoax.

I read this moving scripture and thought I would share it since it really spoke to me. Click Proverbs 8:10-19 to see the entire section, but here are the excerpts that I liked.

Put ICE on your cell phone

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY - following the disaster in London . .

The Ambulance Service has launched a national "In case of Emergency (ICE)" campaign. The idea is that you store the word "ICE" in your mobile phone address book, and next to it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency".

In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly look at your mobile phone and find out who your first contact should be and be able to contact them. For more than one contact name, create ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc. It really could help the emergency services in doing their job. It's so simple that everyone can do it. Please do.

Post this on your blog or email to people in your address book. It won't take too long before everybody will know about this, and it will become an international practice.

I just heard on the radio a news item that today was the 10 year anniversary of the start of eBay, but according to their web site they were founded in September 1995.
